The Johnson City Athletic Club was established in 1999 as a Joint Venture between the City of Johnson City and the Johnson City Housing Authority to provide additional sporting options to the kids of Johnson City.
Community leaders recognized a responsibility to provide facilities and programs that further physical, emotional, social, and spiritual growth opportunities for our kids. The City and the Housing Authority, by working together, are sending a message to today’s kids to continue a legacy – that is, community agencies pooling resources for a common good.
JCAC offers instruction in:
In addition to the athletic focus, the Club provides many intangible benefits to its participants. It has had an immeasurable positive impact on the lives of its young members, many of whom come from less-than-ideal circumstances. It provides positive role models while reinforcing social skills and values and emphasizing character development and discipline. Club members are given the tools to achieve success in school, at home, and in society.
The club has established the Don Marshall Scholarship Program. Interest from the scholarship endowment will assist worthy members of the Club’s boxing program as they pursue their higher education.
JCAC received national recognition by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO): In 2001, it received an Award of Merit for Program Innovation.top of page
Beeson Hall:
Beeson Hall was selected as the site for the Johnson City Athletic Club. Its flexible redesign accommodates a multipurpose program for both boys and girls as well as those physically disabled.
Although the interior of Beeson Hall has recently been renovated, its history dates back to 1942 when Don Beeson, whose family name and contributions to the City are well known, recognized the need for a facility to provide a gathering place for kids of Johnson City. Contacting numerous City residents, he requested their help and support to raise funds for this project.
The legacy, a result of community desire and spirit, was the building we are now using –
- a joint Housing Authority/City facility and program rejuvenation effort,
- a building that is the result of the community working together,
- a building that originated as a result of a joint effort, and
- a building that was started with one idea nearly 60 years ago – the need for a meeting place for Johnson City kids and to involve the community in meeting this need.
